The two rules behind every answer
- Ticket name = ID name on the day you fly. Airlines don't care which name is "right"; they care that it matches the passport or license you present.
- A passport name change is a new passport, by mail. You are without it for the routine 4–6 weeks (2–3 expedited). Never start it before a trip you'll need it for.

Common questions
Should I book the honeymoon in my maiden name or married name?
In the name on the ID you will present at the airport on the travel date. For international trips that's the passport; unless you have 10+ weeks after the wedding, that will still be your current name. Change the passport after the trip.
Can I get a passport in my married name before the wedding?
Not in the U.S. — the marriage certificate has to exist first. (The UK allows a post-dated passport; the U.S. does not.)
What if my tickets are already in my married name?
Either correct the booking to the passport name (most airlines allow a name correction, sometimes for a fee) or get the passport reissued before departure, which needs 6–10 weeks or expedited service.
Do I need a REAL ID to fly domestically?
Since May 7, 2025, yes — or a passport. A standard license without the star is not accepted at TSA.
Is it a problem if my passport and license show different names?
Not for flying, as long as the ticket matches the document you present. Carry the marriage certificate to explain the difference if asked.
